Do You Know How Safe Your Food is From Your Supplier?

Has it ever occured to you as a Business Owner, Chef or indeed anyone who cooks and serves food, that the food you are serving may not be  safe?

Today, there are stringent guidlines for manufacturers and suppliers to have a duty of care to their customers.
However, how would you know if a product has been recalled?
Have you asked questions directly to your suppliers?
For example, if food that is supplied to you which is ‘not fit for consumption’ from a mistake that happened at production stage, how would you know?
What system has the delivery company in place to safeguard you and your customers? These questions are paramount when you source and retain suppliers.

Proven: Your Customers Number 1 Requirement is Food Quality!

Research today has reinforced what I have known for the last 30 years.

Food Quality is of paramount importance.
It’s so important that Customers say Food Quality is their NUMBER 1 requirement when going out to eat!
Reference: Caterer and Hotelkeeper (Horizons) – February 7th 2012.

Click the video below to find out find out why Steve is fuming about this,

Why would you refund money to your Customers?

Because the quality of the food you are serving is poor. Sorry to be so blatantly obvious, but it needs saying
You probably think you are saving money by using poor quality ingredients and can make more profit, but this would be a grave mistake.

It’s actually COSTING you money, very shortsighted….especially when you have to give a refund and/or complimentary meal.
It seems easy today to give out refunds for poor quality food…too easy perhaps?

The only person that is going to suffer is you and your food business, not making enough GP and highly likely the customer won’t visit you again, due to the poor food quality.
Because, it’s now proven what we knew was true all the time….Food Quality is your customers number 1 priority when going out to eat.

To quote Heston Blumenthal “You can’t make great food without great ingredients”.

Thats food for thought isnt it?

So….What are you now going to do about it?

The Best ‘Rubbish’ Customer Experience I have ever had.

This is a reflection and  story of what I believe is one of the best Customer Experiences I have had in a long time and suprisingly where it came from.

Just before Christmas I had to go to a Recyling Centre to get rid of a huge amout of rubbish and I mean, carpets, boxes and wood. It was raining heavily, the carpets sodden and if anybody was watching could have assumed there was a dead body rolled up, enveloped inside… the job was soul destroying to be honest.

I rolled up in the car, and down beaten, I was greeted by, as the weather was freezing and these guys were clothed for the Antartic, cheery, helpful chaps who not only had an affable approach, asked how things were going, leading up to Christmas, but also could not be any more helpul in helping off-load my burdon of rubbish from the boot of my car, still carrying on with the banter as we toiled.  As I left, they were still chatting and said to ‘make sure’ to have a good Christmas. I had to go back again with more of the possible dead corpse and yet again, same as before…frankly I was blown away by ‘their Hospitality’.

They had a tip box… I was in no doubt, not only did these guys deserve a physical, monetary thanks, but also they could have taught many Hospitality people… how to give a lovely, warm and welcoming experience.

The question I asked myself…what motivated them to be this great?! Attitude? Because in essence…these people had nothing to gain from a fantastic attidude!!

“There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is not a choice about the work itself”.

How are you giving your Customers a warm, welcoming experience?

Why is check writing Important?

Communication in your food business is of the Upmost Importance.

Check writing (this is the writing of customer orders from the waiting staff to the kitchen).
As crazy as it seems, training your staff on check writing can literally save you thousands of pounds!!

You may be asking WHY?

The answer is menu comprehension by your waiting staff helps give you time because they understand the ingredients, therefore not going back in the kitchen to ask the chef. Secondly, a badly written check can confuse the kitchen and add more time to the process.
Food can be wasted, meaning an item on the menu could be written in an ambiguous way meaning the chef doesn’t know exactly which dish the customer has ordered. Lets say you have fish & chips on the menu and the check comes in for a Cod.

Does the customer want the beautiful Cod loin special, or does he really want plain fish and chips. Simple things but very easy to get wrong.,

If you have to throw the food away, don’t think all you’ve lost is the cost of the Cod loin,You have LOST the revenue of that dish…the true revenue would have been £15.00, you have lost that amount of revenue, throw into your waste bin…hmmm food for thought!
